Today I’m taking part in the Project Run + Play Pantone Party! Every year, Pantone put out one (or sometimes two) colour that they showcase as their ‘Colour of the year’. This year, those colours are Ultimate Grey and Illuminating (yellow). Audrey from Project Run + Play got in touch with me a little while back to see if I would be interested in taking part by sewing up a pattern from the PR+P shop from fabrics inspired by these two colours. She put me in touch with Vivi from Wicked Fabrics, from whom I was generously gifted the fabric for this project.

I chose the Aubrey Dress designed by Courtney (Sweeter than cupcakes) for Mod Kid. It is a great design featuring contrasting front and back panels and an optional hidden kangaroo pocket (which I didn’t add because I wanted the fabrics to sit super smoothly). Since it features two distinct fabric choices offered by its panelling, I knew it would look great in two contrasting solid colours like these.

The fabrics I chose were both from Wicked fabrics and are cotton elastance jersey. The grey is ‘Steel Grey’ and the yellow is called ‘cool yellow’ . I also used ribbing in Steel grey for the neck ribbing. I really don’t think I could have found a closer match to the pantone colours than these fabrics!! Wicked fabrics is a Sydney based online fabric business that sells an amazing array of fabrics – especially knit fabrics. I’d not heard of them before this project but I will certainly be shopping at WF again in the future. Thank you Vivi!! The shipping within Australia was super quick too.

The fabric is excellent quality with great stretch and structure. It is also soft and super wide! I ordered a metre of both fabrics and easily have enough fabric for even a t-shirt out of both colours for myself…watch this space. I used my overlocker to piece the dress together and my sewing machine with a ball point needle for the hemming.

If you are keen to check out some more Pantone party sewing inspiration, make sure to check out the Project Run + Play blog. There are already lots of posts from other designers who have sewn up PR+P patterns inspired by Ultimate Grey and Illuminating! Thanks Audrey for having me and thank you Vivi for the generous fabric gift!
